Well,
with The Fivepenny Piece on it, it's
got to be the best, hasn't it! But any album
with that title is going to have an impossible
task to live up to its name. However, this is
an interesting and eclectic compilation which
should appeal to a lot of people - and at only
around £6.99 for a double CD with 40 tracks,
it's right good value. While
it includes tracks by many stalwarts of the
folk scene: Richard Thompson, The Corries, Bert
Jansch, The Dubliners, to name just a few; a
few eyebrows might be raised at the inclusion
of Jethro Tull, The Band and Jeff Beck!
The
tracks date from the 1960s right up to the present,
and some classic tracks are included as well
as many lesser-known ones. It's also great to
see some perhaps less widely-known artists of
the calibre of Leo Kottke, Dory Previn, and
Loudon Wainwright III represented, too. The
Houghton Weavers also appear - a pity it's the
Rose of Tralee rather than a proper Lanky track,
but you can't have it all!
It is hoped that the inclusion of Watercolour
Morning on this album helps to raise
the Fivepenny Piece's profile with the listening
public, and put more weight behind our campaign
to get EMI to release the rest of the band's
back catalogue!
